The area of your roof that is most prone to leaking is wherever a wall or chimney has to intersect the roof, causing an exposed joint. To keep this from happening, you will usually find something installed called kickout flashing. It looks like a folded piece of material that, just like its name, has the purpose of kicking water out from the siding so that it doesn’t leak behind it, causing mold and rot and other water related problems. This is very important, since water damage can turn out to be a very costly affair.
The reason why some homes will be lacking this could be that misguided homeowners think that the kickout flashing looks bad or bent, and feel like they detract from the appearance of the home. If you do have kickout flashing, you should make sure that it is in good shape so that it can do the work that it was made for.
