If you live in a rural area, in the case of a fire, having the Calvary may not be an option if the fire spreads quickly. So having another option in place to prevent spread of a potential fire will be of great benefit to you. What option is there out there for you? That is what will be discussed in the article today.

It is quite alarming how many people die in the U.S. alone from fires within peoples own homes, so in order to combat that, fire sprinklers have become more readily available for personal use within the home. These fire sprinklers use much less water than the fire department would to put out a fire in your home, between 10 and 28 gallons to be exact.

The benefit is that anything could happen to fire trucks while en route, extra time may be needed to assemble a fire fighting crew, we never know. However, with a fire sprinkler system installed in your home,  the fire can be put out in the time it takes for a crew to be assembled and make it to your home. While they are expensive to install some times, the benefits of having a sprinkler system installed will greatly outweigh the cost in the long run.

So its winter time.. and you may be having trouble keeping your upstairs floor in your home warm so that its comfortable to sleep in at night. You may have looked for common problems as to why your floor isn’t heating right, but in this article we will give a few extra tips to help you fix this potential problem.

First of all, you want to make sure that all of your heat ducts and vents are clear and not having furniture covering them. By blocking the vents, you block the heat from coming up. Another thing that you can do is make sure that your furnace is turned on to a certain degree so that the furnace will actually kick on. Also checking that your furnace is clear of dust, clutter, and other small materials that could block its vents from relaying heat throughout the house is extremely important as well.

By doing routine maintenance on your furnace and routinely checking your vent ducts and ventilation system, you will be able to keep your house warm and cozy for your family during the winter.

Within a 17 year period, over 15,000 children under the age of 18 all visited emergency rooms because of furniture related tip over accidents. The problem has been getting worse, with a 40% increase over the years, and the majority of the injuries are from flat screen TV’s from tipping over. What can be done? Here are a couple tips for protecting your children from tip over accidents.

One basic thing that you can do is just to supervise your child at all times. It may not be possible sometimes, but if the effort is put in you have a greater reaction time if your child is doing something that may be unsafe. With TV’s, you can place them lower to the ground and their backs to the wall, thus reducing the potential of the TV causing injury to your child. If you have a large dresser that is really heavy, place your TV on the far backside of the dresser so that if a child does climb on the dresser, they won’t be able to reach the TV.

To keep heavy items from moving, use furniture straps or L-brackets. Most of these simple devices don’t need holes drilled through, so they are simple and easy to install. For dressers, you can install drawer stops to keep drawers from extending to their full length. Without these stops, the drawers can be pulled out, and potentially even cause the dresser to tip over. Keeping these few things in mind will help to keep your children healthy and safe and your furniture safe.

This type of film can be bought at your local hardware store and can be applied to any window, can be formed to any shape of your window by using a razor blade or cutting knife. Its interesting to note that sometimes people will apply this film to a window to keep the window from shattering into dangerous pieces everywhere. Do you live in the part of the city where you are constantly hearing trains, cars, planes go past your house, and it keeps you up all night because of all the noise that they are making? Have no fear, sleepless nights are no more!

There are some simple things that you can do in order to reduce the amount of noise that is able to pass through your house. If you have hardwood floors, tables, beds, consider putting in softer pieces of furniture. Sound will bounce off of softer furniture a lot more than hardwood furniture would. So think about maybe putting in carpet, soft couches, maybe even the special made foam that you can put up against your bedroom walls that will absolutely keep all the noise out.

In conclusion, if you find that it is with your neighbors who are being quite noisy at night, one thing that you can do is get your local counties noise ordinance list, describing what noises should and shouldn’t be occurring at different parts in the day. If the neighbors are noisy at night, don’t be afraid to call the police.

So with this in mind, you’ll definitely want to start thinking about renovating those parts to get it back to its former glory, and so you can once again live safely inside. But how do you start the renovation process? Here’s a couple of things to keep in mind while start you start your renovations.

For starters, you’ll need all the required PPE or personal protective equipment. Even on any small job sites, there is a possibility of getting injured, so wearing your standard gloves, safety glasses, and work boots to protect yourself while on the job. While getting the job done is a priority, the top priority is your safety, the job can get done without being rushed, but if you rush the job, you might be rushed to the hospital, so safety is the priority.

Next, you want to make sure you have all the right equipment for your job. Without the right kind of tools, you won’t be able to finish your job the right way. Nearly 8,000 children are sent to the ER every day, averaging around 2.8 million every year from non-fatal injuries. So the first step in protecting your child from windows would be to move any furniture from the windows area to make it less accessible for the child. Secondly, by installing windows stops will allow the windows to only be opened to a certain point, maybe 4 inches, thus removing the possibility that a child could put their head out the window or even a limb.

Stairs are another huge danger to young children. Having a safety gate either at the top of the staircase or at the bottom will prevent your child from gaining access to the stairway, which would potentially lead to a fall. Also, your railing along your staircase poses yet another problem. The child may want to climb on it, put their head through the risers, etc. Having the height of your ballisters be between 34″-36″ inches will not allow the child access to the top of the railing, and having 4″ space between each riser will keep the child from putting a limb though.

Keeping all these tips in mind will help you to further protect your child from potential dangers in the home.

Do you really need a safe room for your house? They can be extremely useful in the times that we live in, with crime steadily growing, a safe room can be a great asset to your house. But what exactly are they used for?

In the case of a break in, while you are home, you can get to the safe room, which would give you more time to alert the police. Also, if a nuclear bomb exploded, granted it may not survive in the immediate vicinity, but there’s still a chance of survival from the radiation if the room if a safe distance from the blast radius. One of the things that have a higher likelihood of happening, however, is in the case of a natural disaster.

Having a safe room built with heavy materials like steel, concrete, etc, will help further protect you and your family. A few things that you’ll need for your room are water, plenty of emergency food, blankets, some form of electricity, medicine, flashlights, and a first aid kit. Even though safe rooms were more common during the Cold War than they are today, safe rooms can be extremely useful in the case of an emergency, which will help you to continue to protect yourself and your family.

How To Prevent Loss Of Heat In Your Home https://camelothomeinspect.com/how-to-prevent-loss-of-heat-in-your-home/ Mon, 30 Apr 2018 22:23:23 +0000 https://camelothomeinspect.com/?p=897 The post How To Prevent Loss Of Heat In Your Home appeared first on Germantown MD Home Inspections.

Over 33% of a home’s heat is lost due to poor insulation of the doors and windows. How can you protect your home from so much heat loss?

If you discover cracks or gaps along your window sill or by your door, the cheapest way and simplest way to fix this would be to use rope caulk and seal the cracks as quickly as possible.

The next step would be to install weatherstrips alongside the full perimeter of your door, as well as door sweeps along the full length at the bottom of the door. For windows, a special lining, that, like weatherstripping, will provide an air-tight area between the window and frame.

Windows that have rotting wood, cracked glass, locks that won’t work, etc, should be repaired asap. Even having something as simple as drapes across your windows can help with keeping either cool air in or hot air out. These are just some practical, and efficient ways you can easily use to reduce energy and heat loss.
