There are many different disasters that can damage your home. Some of them you might not have any control over, such as wildfires, heavy winds, and other problems. You can however do your best to minimize the risk of damage to your home when one of these events occurs. This is accomplished by creating what is called defensible space.

The idea behind defensible space is to limit the vegetation and other stuff around your home that could become a projectile during heavy winds or fuel during a wildfire.

Usually, a homeowner will divide the space around their home in 3 zones. In the first zone that goes out about 15 feet from the walls of your home, you should have everything cleared out, cutting down bushes and trees. In the second zone, which stretches about 100 feet from your home, you can have some trees and bushes spread out, but it should be kept fairly clear. In the third zone, you can let things grow fairly freely, but you should still not let it grow out of control.

Do you know how to sew? A large part of the population doesn’t, and that makes it difficult for us to make our own face masks to use in public, but fortunately, the CDC realizes that not all of us are seamstresses. On their website they provide instructions both how to sew a facemask if you can do so, and how to cut one out of an old t-shirt, using nothing but a pair of scissors. So why would you need to make your own mask? Well, the CDC recommends that we should be wearing a mask in public to prevent the COVID-19 virus from spreading. These homemade masks can stop particles from escaping from our mouths and nose, and they can prevent some from coming in, so if everyone wears a mask, it is going to be a good prevention technique in unison with other methods, such as social distancing. It is important to avoid touching the mask when wearing it since that could transfer contaminants.

Hand sanitizer has become a lot more popular than it ever was. Stores sold out of hand sanitizer as well as many other cleaning items early on in the epidemic. People are using it throughout the day hoping to keep themselves healthy. Some even have gone to the lengths of trying to make their own hand sanitizer but in reality, unless you have over 60% alcohol content, your homemade hand sanitizer is not going to be effective in killing the virus. It is also important to remember that while hand sanitizer is fairly effective at killing the virus it is not 100% effective. This is why the recommendation is to wash your hands whenever possible instead of just using hand sanitizer for cleaning needs. While hand sanitizer can be useful to have when you have no other options you should always choose a sink over the pump bottle whenever you can.

There are some things that we might not think of when cleaning our home that now should give more attention. The COVID-19 virus spreads mainly by touch, so cleaning off surfaces that you commonly touch is very important. What do these include? In your home, you use your light switches, faucet handles, door handles and stove knobs often. If you ever touch these after coming home from a trip to the store, you could have contamination on your hands that you then spread to those surfaces. In your vehicle, the handles, steering wheel, seat-belt, and shift-stick could be contaminated as well. Using a disinfectant to clean those off before and after you have gone anywhere will lower your risk of getting infected.

While it might seem a little paranoid to go through all this, if you are older or have underlying health issues, it could save your life. The same goes for any person that you get in contact with that has those problems.

When your dryer is running in the basement, does it turn the whole room into a sauna? If you are not careful, an improper dryer exhaust can cause this to happen. There is about a gallon of water in your average load of laundry, and if this is released as steam into your home, it can lead to moisture in your home and water-related damage.

So how do you prevent this from happening? It is important that you have proper ventilation from your dryer.

Some have installed filters that allow them to vent the dryer air inside, but these will not prevent the moisture from escaping. There is no good alternative to a dryer that vents to the outside.

You should also do your best to have the exhaust duct go as straight as possible to the outside. Avoid pinching the vent by pushing back the dryer too far, since this can lead to lint buildup inside the vent, and even possibly a fire.

You might not think much about your thermostat in your home. It is a necessary feature, but not something that usually gives you any issues. Do you know though, that you can save a lot of money by investing in your thermostat? While it is possible to get into a habit of turning the heat up and down manually, having a digital thermostat that does this automatically can make sure that it happens regularly. This is not the only benefit from a digital thermostat. They are also generally more accurate than older ones, meaning that they will actually adjust the temperature correctly. Setting a schedule for your typical week will save you a lot of money on heating and cooling costs.

If you want to go a step further, using a smart thermostat will allow you to change your temperature remotely. Some of them will even learn your habits and adjust accordingly.

We humans couldn’t exist without water, but water isn’t always a benefit to our lives. This is especially true inside of a home. Water related damage can be very expensive to deal with. One way in which water makes it into your home that you might not think of is condensation. Condensation happens when air carrying a lot of moisture hits a cold surface. In your home, this will usually be windows or pipes and other metal surfaces, but it is possible that it could happen even on a cold wooden surface or something similar. The problem is that the water that condenses can pool up and then lead to issues such as mold and other water damage.

To prevent this from happening, you need to keep humid air out of areas where it could cause condensation to form. This is why it is important that your exhaust vents in the kitchen and bathroom vent outside the home. Insulating your pipes can also help in keeping condensation down, since there won’t be a cold surface where the moisture might condense.

Did you ever consider different types of heating that is available? One option that is not the most common here in the US, but one that provides very pleasant heat is called radiant heating. There are a few styles of heating elements that are used for this, some are air filled, which isn’t the most effective type, others are powered by electricity while you have some that are filled with a fluid. They can be installed in walls, ceilings or floors, and have many advantages. Unlike forced air heating, there are no ducts where heat can get lost. Depending on how the heating elements are installed, there is also the possibility of heating up a concrete slab that will retain its heat for a long time. If the heating elements are liquid filled, they don’t use much electricity for operating the pump, and the liquid can be heated by many different means. Those with allergies also prefer radiant heating since it doesn’t spread allergens in your home like forced air does.

What do you do if the water in your sink stops running? Do you turn to drain chemicals to clear it up? Many do, but they might not be considering the damage they are doing to their pipes, septic system and the environment. If at least one of those are a concern of yours, you might want to think twice before using those bottles in your sink.

While many drain chemicals now come with labels such as “Safe for septic” and “Won’t harm your pipes” this does not mean that repeated use is harmless. The bacteria that lives in your septic tank are sensitive to any added chemicals, and if they are killed, your septic system will quickly suffer since there is nothing there to break down the waste material.

Using a plunger or snake is going to be a much safer alternative, and you won’t run the risk of having dangerous chemicals splash in your face that could cause damage.

Caring for your home can be an overwhelming job if you think of all the things that could go wrong, but if you divide up all the necessary tasks into smaller, more manageable ones you can have peace of mind while not working too hard. Having a balanced maintenance schedule that you stick close to will ensure that your home stays in good condition for longer, and as you surely know, it is a lot easier and cheaper to do maintenance than doing repairs after something has failed.

But what should you put on your maintenance schedule? This depends greatly on the type of home you own, but you should be able to find sample maintenance schedules on the internet that you later can customize to fit your needs. Of course, the most important part of any schedule is you. No matter how comprehensive and detailed your schedule is, if you don’t stick to it, it won’t serve any purpose. You could schedule just a few 10-20 minute shifts throughout the week and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish.
