A problem that can be very serious for a homeowner is when they experience backflow. Backflow is caused by a sudden drop in water pressure. This could happen due to a burst main water pipe, a fire hydrant being used by the fire department, or because of some natural disaster. Whatever the cause, the drop in pressure can lead to sewage being pulled back up the pipe, into a home. You can just imagine what havoc that could cause in your home, and this is why a device called an atmospheric vacuum breaker is used. These pipes are built over the ground, and their purpose is to pull air into the system and thus preventing backflow. It basically is a simple valve that lets water flow during normal operation, but if there are possible backflow conditions, it will instead let air in and break the vacuum.

While it is a simple construction, it is a vital part of a functioning water supply system.

One of the worst things that can happen to a homeowner in the winter months is frozen pipes. This can potentially cause serious problems and lead to expensive repairs, so when it happens to you, it is important that you deal with it in the right way. In fact, trying to thaw a frozen pipe the wrong way could end up putting you in a worse situation than you would have been if you hadn’t done anything.

A common mistake is using a blowtorch or similar heating implement on the pipes. Even though this will melt the frozen water very quickly, it can also do serious damage to your pipes, causing a catastrophic leak. A better alternative is taking it slow and steady. Using a heat gun or hair dryer will allow you to thaw the frozen pipe while avoiding the extreme effect using high heat could have.

Leave your faucets in the home open while working on the pipe, that way the pressure will be lower.

When you sit down and calculate the value of all the electronic devices in your home, you might be surprised at how much they are worth. Electronic devices can be very expensive, and to top it off, they are usually very fragile as well. So imagine a surge coming through your power lines and frying them all. Not a very pretty thought is it? This is why it is worth the money to invest in a good surge protector for your electronics. These devices are built to protect you against that worst-case scenario.

Surge protectors should have an indicator letting you know that they are functioning properly, and you should make a habit of checking this regularly. The reason for that indicator is that there is a risk that your surge protector has served its purpose a few times. They are only built to be able to take a number of surges before they fail, and when that happens, you will need to replace them with a new one.

Trampolines can be a lot of fun for children to play on but are you aware of the potential dangers of a trampoline? There are many parents that have been caught unaware by some serious injuries that happened right in their own backyard.

The danger of trampolines can basically be in one of 2 categories. It’s either because of the way it is being used or the way it was installed.

A trampoline might be more fun to play on with your friends, but the risk of accidents goes up greatly when more than one person at a time uses it. In fact, this is probably the most common way that people get hurt on trampolines. You might not think that it would be that serious when one child bumps into another, but with the forces that are involved, it could get really ugly.

When it comes to the way the trampoline is installed, you should ensure it is on flat, even ground and that there is sturdy netting around it. You should also let your children know that they never should jump off of an elevated surface onto the trampoline. Training your children on how to use a trampoline correctly could save their lives.

You might be surprised to hear this, but you definitely have water leaks in your home. No, we’re not talking about major leaks that are going to cause serious problems, but the reality is that every home has leaks. According to some estimates, the average home loses 20 gallons of water daily because of these small leaks. Of course, you would notice if someone was to pour 20 gallons of water into your home, and fortunately, a lot of the water lost will run down a sink and won’t do any damage, but it is a good idea to periodically give your plumbing a good examination to see if there are any signs of leaks where they could cause damage, such as under your sink.
Feeling the pipes, floor, and walls around pipes will help you to note if there might be something leaking out. This should be fixed so that there won’t be water damage or mold growth.

Are the wall receptacles in your home grounded? Some homeowners might struggle with the answer to that question, but others might think they know the answer when they really don’t.
In modern homes, the receptacles will be grounded, but in older homes, it might be that the receptacles just never got wired for a ground. If a homeowner decided that he wanted to have grounded receptacles, it is possible that he decided to replace the ungrounded receptacles with grounded ones, but in reality, the change is only cosmetic. This could pose a serious risk for someone that bought the home unawares. There are many appliances that won’t function correctly without a proper ground, and surge protectors can’t do their job without it.
In some locations, you might be able to fix this shortcoming by installing a GFCI receptacle, but this is not a replacement for a proper ground. A GFCI receptacle will however protect you against electrocution.

Have you ever dealt with a plumbing leak in your home? If not, you are fortunate, because it can be quite a traumatic experience and it can cause a lot of damage.
While it might be difficult to imagine, you could easily cause this just by careless DIY work.
Whenever you are about to hit a nail into a wall, drill, or saw, you should first make sure there are no pipes behind it, especially if it is near a bathroom or kitchen.
A pipe can discharge about 14 gallons each minute, so if you manage to bust one, you will quickly have a lot of water to deal with. It is a good idea to be aware of where the water shut-off valves are located in your home in case you have to do so quickly. Once there is a hole in your pipe, the pressure is going to prevent you from doing anything to stop it.

Having small bushes and other types of shrubbery around your home can add a lot of character and beauty, but there are some issues to consider if you decide to do some landscaping of your own. There are many different types of shrubbery that are quite hardy and that can thrive in your yard, but you should consider where they will be located. If you grow shrubbery in the wrong location, it could possibly lead to future problems.

For example, if you have bushes growing too close to your home, then they could function as a gateway for wood-destroying organisms to get to your home. Even if the bushes are healthy, it could be a simple task for insects to use them as a bridge to get to any wooden features of your home.

Bushes that push up against a building can also lead to water damage and moss growth on your home. This is why it is good to make sure that you cut back anything that is growing in that direction.

How safe is your home? For some homeowners, this might not be a major concern, but the reality is that there are many possible dangers in your home. If a friend or family member was hurt because of something that you could have fixed, you would probably feel terrible. So, to prevent that from happening, put yourself in the shoes of someone that came to visit your home. Just think about how someone that is unfamiliar with your home and its surroundings could get hurt.

Maybe your walkway is cracked or uneven, posing a trip hazard. Do you have old trees with large branches hanging over an area where people would walk? Are the steps in your stair uneven, or are the railings loose?

You might be surprised at all the dangers you will find on a walk-through. Taking the time to fix them is a good way for you to show how much you care about your friends and their safety.

When the water coming out of your faucet isn’t hot enough, do you go into the basement and turn the knob on your water heater? Many homeowners have done so, not thinking much about any ramifications of their actions. It is recommended that you keep your water heater at 120 degrees, and the reason for this is fairly simple – it saves you money and it lowers the risk for scalding. Unfortunately, not all homes are as well planned as they should be, so it is possible that your water loses a lot of heat before it makes it to the faucet, or maybe you have a large family and end up using up your hot water quickly.

Whatever the case is for you, there is a cost for keeping the water at a higher temperature. Your water heater will need to maintain that higher level even when you aren’t using any water, unless you want to spend the time adjusting the setting on the water heater several times throughout the day.
