No one likes strange smells, especially if they are coming from something that we are about to eat or drink. In the case of your drinking water, having odors is never very pleasant, considering how we use that for many different things around the home. It might be a small comfort, but most of the odors that come from your water, aren’t really all that harmful for you. Many of the substances that can end up in your water that are truly harmful don’t have a smell to identify them.

If you are connected to a municipal water system, you have very little control of the quality of the water that you receive, but once it is in your home, you could install filters that will improve the quality.

On the other hand, if you have a well, you have all the control, but not the resources that a municipality does. To find out the quality of your water, you will need to send a sample to a lab for testing.

If you ever bought a car that was owned by a smoker, you probably know how difficult tobacco odor can be to remove. Smoke particles are very fine and can make it through a lot of different filters, and there will also be a film left behind from the tobacco that is very hard to clean up.

While this is a pain when it comes to vehicles, it is even worse in a home, so before buying a home of someone that smoked indoors, you should consider if you are ready to do the work necessary for cleaning it up.

While some claim to have had success using ozone to clean up tobacco odor, this is a dangerous gas to be dealing with, and it could be lethal if you are exposed, so it should be used with care.

The only proven and true method is to clean the house thoroughly. There is not going to be a single part of your home that can be overlooked. Even light fixtures and lamps need to be cleaned off, since the heat from the bulb will make the odor airborne again.

Any filters that you have in your home need to be replaced, such as, in HVAC units and kitchen fans, among others.

When you mix electricity and water, you get a dangerous situation. This is why there is electrical code stipulating that wall receptacles in bathrooms and kitchens should be GFCI receptacles. What is a GFCI receptacle? Simply put, it monitors the current in your outlet, and when it becomes unbalanced, it will disconnect power. GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, and they have been available for many decades now.

GFCI receptacles can save your life when they are installed properly. You should periodically check that they function properly. This is why they are equipped with 2 buttons, one for testing and one for resetting. When you push the test button, the reset button should pop out, and power to the receptacle, as well as to any receptacles that are connected to it, should be cut. If this does not happen, you should have an electrician take a look at the outlet as soon as possible, and you should not use the outlet until it has been fixed.

Have you ever noticed a lot of tiny black flies in your home? They might look like fruit flies, but if they seem to congregate in your bathroom or another area in your home where there is a sink, it is possible that they are sewer gnats. If you look closer at the bugs, you will notice that they are moth-like in shape, and if you swat at them, they leave a black residue behind.

Sewer gnats are mostly harmless, but they are a real nuisance to have flying around your home. Unfortunately, getting rid of sewer gnats can prove quite difficult.

Since they live in the sewer, you will need to remove their nests mechanically for them to stop appearing in your home. Boiling water and chemicals will usually not kill them entirely, and if only a few survive, they will be back. Instead, by using a snake or a similar device, you can remove the nests completely.

Did you know that there are several different types of fire extinguishers? In fact, a fire extinguisher that might work perfectly fine on one fire might not work on another one, or even make it worse.

There are 5 different fire classifications, and you will find markings on your fire extinguisher to let you know what types it can be used on.

Type A fire is a regular wood based material fire. Type B is when you have a fire in gasoline, motor oil or other liquids based on petroleum. Type C fires are electrical, which means that using water will put you at risk for electrocution. Type D fire is one that you most likely will never need to deal with. It is in combustible metals usually found in laboratories, such as magnesium and potassium. Type K fires are common in kitchens. They start in fats, such as grease from a fryer or animal fats.

It seems like a lot of people today are interested in making their home a smart home. There are many different services and companies making smart devices, ranging from TVs to microwaves to washers and even refrigerators. With so many choices and options, it is very important to make a well informed choice, not only when it comes to the quality and price of the devices, but also the security.

Usually, when you purchase a device that is WiFi enabled, you can control it with its own app on your phone, but if you end up buying several devices from different manufacturers, controlling them all might turn into a headache on its own. That is why it usually is best to pick a device that functions with one of the major companies that are well known. The ability to control all your devices with your voice without the need to start up a bunch of different apps is very convenient. You should also make sure that the device is fairly up to date, since older devices might have compromised security making them prime targets for hackers.

Have you ever considered wood roofing? It can be a very beautiful and stylish choice, even if it might not be the most durable or cheapest option out there.

What should you keep in mind when choosing wood roofing? The first point to keep in mind is that wood roofing is quite high maintenance. If you are not ready to spend the time and money to take care of it, you probably shouldn’t choose to get that type of roofing material. Instead of being a beautiful addition to your home, it will quickly become a liability, falling apart and offering very little protection from the elements.

Wood roofing is covered with a fire retardant chemical when it comes from the manufacturer, but as time passes, it will no longer be efficient, and will need to be reapplied.

You also need to make sure that no wood-boring insects infest your roof, which might require the use of pesticides. You should also make sure that water doesn’t collect on the roof, causing mold growth, rot and water damage.

Today’s world is becoming less and less secure. In the time you read this blog, 3-5 people in the US have their home burglarized, and it happens in varying neighborhoods, rich and poor, and often in the middle of the day. What can you do to minimize the chance that you become part of that statistic?

It’s very important that you never broadcast the fact that you are not at home, neither to those that can see your home, nor on social media. A mailbox that is overflowing, an unshoveled driveway and unmowed lawn could easily invite burglars. Instead, ask someone to care for these things while you are gone, and if possible, get your lights on a timer so as to give the appearance of someone being at home.

An alarm system is also a good deterrent, so post signs about having it installed.

You should also make sure that your front door is solid wood or metal, since most burglars enter through the front door. If there are windows by the door, they shouldn’t be so close that you can reach in and undo the deadbolt.

Have you ever smelled sewer gas? It is not a very pleasant experience, but that’s not all, sewer gas could actually pose a major health hazard to you and your family. If your p-trap were to fail, sewer gas could leak into your home, since it is the only thing blocking access. But what could be the reason for a p-trap failure? One possibility is that the p-trap hasn’t been overloaded. A general rule of thumb is that a p-trap can only handle two connected sources at once. The p-trap also needs to be ventilated properly, otherwise water will not run through it easily. You can tell if there is a problem with ventilation because it will cause other drains in your home that are nearby to start gurgling when it drains.

If there is not much use of a drain that has a p-trap, it is possible that the water that is supposed to be standing in it evaporates, causing it to fail. You might need to install a tap primer that will top off the water in the p-trap when it runs low.

The area of your roof that is most prone to leaking is wherever a wall or chimney has to intersect the roof, causing an exposed joint. To keep this from happening, you will usually find something installed called kickout flashing. It looks like a folded piece of material that, just like its name, has the purpose of kicking water out from the siding so that it doesn’t leak behind it, causing mold and rot and other water related problems. This is very important, since water damage can turn out to be a very costly affair.

The reason why some homes will be lacking this could be that misguided homeowners think that the kickout flashing looks bad or bent, and feel like they detract from the appearance of the home. If you do have kickout flashing, you should make sure that it is in good shape so that it can do the work that it was made for.
