When the water coming out of your faucet isn’t hot enough, do you go into the basement and turn the knob on your water heater? Many homeowners have done so, not thinking much about any ramifications of their actions. It is recommended that you keep your water heater at 120 degrees, and the reason for this is fairly simple – it saves you money and it lowers the risk for scalding. Unfortunately, not all homes are as well planned as they should be, so it is possible that your water loses a lot of heat before it makes it to the faucet, or maybe you have a large family and end up using up your hot water quickly.

Whatever the case is for you, there is a cost for keeping the water at a higher temperature. Your water heater will need to maintain that higher level even when you aren’t using any water, unless you want to spend the time adjusting the setting on the water heater several times throughout the day.

Are your pipes insulated? While you might not think that this is necessary, there are many benefits to having pipes insulated. Of course, it will be a protection against freezing in the wintertime, but this is not the only reason why it is a good idea to insulate your pipes. If your hot and cold water pipes are too close together, there will be heat transfer between them resulting in cold water that is too warm and hot water that is too cold. Your hot water will also keep the heat for longer in pipes that are insulated, which means that you won’t spend as much energy heating water. If your pipes are noisy, insulation will help as well. On top of all those benefits, insulation can also prevent condensation from forming on your cold water pipes.

For pipes that are easily accessible, adding insulation is easy. It comes in pre-shaped sections that can be cut to length. If you want to make it a little more efficient, you can add some tape to seal it up well.

While carpet isn’t as popular as it once was in homes, there is still a large group of people who want that soft surface under their feet. While we’re not going to be taking sides in this battle, there is one place where carpet is especially unhygienic. You’ve probably guessed it – it’s in your bathroom.

There are many reasons why a carpeted bathroom is a bad idea. The first is the inevitable spread of germs from using the toilet and stepping in and out of the shower. While some carpets are specifically marketed as antimicrobial or antibacterial, they are still going to be a lot more difficult to clean than a hard surface. In fact, if you have a home with a carpeted bathroom and you don’t want to remove the carpet, you should use a steam cleaner on it regularly.

Another issue is water damage. You could have mold growth start in or even underneath your carpet, leading to air-quality issues and other problems.

While it might be comfortable with soft carpet under your feet in the morning when you enter the bathroom, the downsides of having carpet on the floor there are just too many.

Picking the right siding material for your home is not always going to be a straightforward decision. There are many different choices out there, and there are different situations in which one material is preferable to another. Take metal siding for example. If you chose to go with stainless steel, you could have issues if you also have a pool, since the chlorine in the pool water would damage your siding. On the other hand, if you choose galvanized steel and you live by the ocean, the saltwater would damage it instead.

It is important to be aware of these things before you invest in your siding since it could set you back a considerable amount.

Overall, steel siding is a good choice, despite these shortcomings. Steel siding is sturdy and has become much more widely available for residential homes than it was in the past. Both the price and the styles of the siding have improved, so as long as you know what type of rust prevention is best for the area where you live, you can be happy with your choice.

Out of all the insects that a homeowner has to deal with, ants are probably not very high up on the list of pests, but having an ant infestation in your home can definitely be very annoying. This is especially so if they are one of the types of ants that can chew the insulation on your electrical wires, which could cause a fire.

Still, even if you aren’t dealing with something that serious, you probably want to make sure that ants are staying out of your home. Ants can be very annoying, especially if you find them everywhere you look.

So what do you need to do to keep ants at bay? There are some things that you should keep out of their reach to avoid attracting ants.

Ants love sugar, so anything that contains sugar that they can access is going to be a feast for them. If you spill soda, coffee with sugar in it, or tea with honey, they are sure to find it, so you should be diligent about cleaning up spills if you have this problem. Be careful with your recycling as well, since sugary liquids left behind can attract ants.

When you hear the wind howling and your home is shaking in the wind, do you wish that there was something you could do about it? Some homeowners find themselves chased out of their own backyard by heavy winds that make it too uncomfortable to spend time outside. Since you can’t make the wind stop blowing, what are your alternatives?

One is to plant a windbreak. A windbreak is basically a row of trees that are sitting in the path of the wind, forcing the wind up and over your home. For this to be successful, it needs to be tall enough, tight enough, and sit far enough away from your home. Usually, you would want the windbreak to be planted about 4 times the height of your home away.

As for the choice of trees, a common practice is to use two different kinds. One that is faster growing and will offer you a quick fix, but with a shorter life-span, and then a second row that is made from longer-lasting, but slower growing trees.

Have you ever thought about installing a new bathroom faucet? It might seem like a complicated job, but as long as you remember one vital step in the process, it’s fairly hard to mess it up. So what is the vital step? As with any plumbing job, you want to make sure that you turn off the water supply.

Forgetting about this step has led to many problems for homeowners that found themselves disconnecting something that was holding back the full pressure in their water supply line.

Once the water is shut off there are usually just 4 steps needed for removing your faucet and then the same four steps in reverse for installing the new faucet.

First, you remove the water supply lines from the faucet, then you undo the nuts that connect the faucet to the sink, if necessary you should remove the lift rod from the stopper in the sink. This should be all that is needed for the removal of your old faucet. After you do it all in reverse with the new faucet, you might want to put some silicone around the faucet to make it water-tight.

As summer is here, so are the bugs. While we can see how they are necessary for nature, some of them we wish we wouldn’t see so much of. Take wasps for example. They can make it dangerous to be outside of your own home, especially if you have allergies. Wasps are more aggressive than bees, and they can sting you over and over again, unlike a bee who dies when it stings you.

As with any insects, you need to find their nest to make sure that you get rid of them. Killing individual wasps is not going to solve your problems. It can be dangerous to attempt to remove a nest, especially if you don’t have the correct gear and training, so it might be best to have an exterminator take care of it for you, but if you really want to take care of the issue yourself, you should do so at night, since they are less active.

Have you ever heard of bed bugs? Most likely you have since they have been the fear of homeowners for many years. Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to get rid of, especially since the only pesticide that was truly effective in fighting them turned out to have serious health side-effects.

Staying in a hotel is one of the most common ways in which homeowners get problems with bed bugs in the first place. With travel being so common, bed bugs can quickly travel from one place to another infesting even relatively nice hotels. Whenever you stay in a hotel room, you should make sure that there are no bed bugs before you even set down your bags on the couch. By pulling at the seams of mattresses and couch pillows, you should quickly be able to ascertain whether there are bed bugs there or not. They tend to cluster in areas that give them good hiding places.

If you find any traces, do not be afraid to speak up and request a new room. Just be careful, since bed bugs spread very easily, it is possible that several rooms are infested.

When you spill a liquid on your carpeted floor, do you immediately clean it up? Some might not worry too much about it if it is water, while others don’t even worry when it is soda or something like that, but in reality, anything that you spill on the carpet should be cleaned immediately. This is because of the risk of mold growth. Mold can be very harmful to your health, and it can start growing if it finds a dark moist spot in your carpet that is ideal for it to live in. In some carpets, it might be very difficult to spot the mold until it has spread quite a bit, and it’s even more difficult when the mold is growing underneath the carpet.

A good indicator for mold is your nose since it can pick up the musty smell of mold. If you do suspect there is mold growth in your carpet, you shouldn’t waste any time, since it can spread so quickly.
