Are you deciding to get chickens for your backyard? Make sure you first do your research. Chickens can be a great addition to your yard. They eat ticks and once you have had fresh eggs, there is no going back to store-bought eggs. There are a few things though that you need to consider before you purchase your chickens.
You need to first find out your local ordinance for chickens. Does your area allow you to have chickens? Many urban areas do not allow you to have them. Or they may allow you to have hens, but no roosters. Also, do you have a large enough area for them? Do you have to worry about predators, for example, raccoons, foxes, or even hawks?
You will also need to consider what breed of chicken you will want. Some are better tick eaters than others. Some are better layers than others. You will also need to consider the noise factor. If you live in an urban area, or even if you don’t want a lot of noise in the country, you may want to go with a breed of chicken that is known to be quieter. Some chickens, even hens, can be quite noisy.
So these are just a few things to consider before adding chickens to your backyard. You will be happy that you did your research.
