What do you do if the water in your sink stops running? Do you turn to drain chemicals to clear it up? Many do, but they might not be considering the damage they are doing to their pipes, septic system and the environment. If at least one of those are a concern of yours, you might want to think twice before using those bottles in your sink.

While many drain chemicals now come with labels such as “Safe for septic” and “Won’t harm your pipes” this does not mean that repeated use is harmless. The bacteria that lives in your septic tank are sensitive to any added chemicals, and if they are killed, your septic system will quickly suffer since there is nothing there to break down the waste material.

Using a plunger or snake is going to be a much safer alternative, and you won’t run the risk of having dangerous chemicals splash in your face that could cause damage.
